The Vagary

Nancy Schumacher, Jim Sipe

Products:
Perennials, Natives, Herbs

Member Since: Approximately 1985!

Nancy loves both language and plants. The business name “The Vagary” was inspired by the vagaries of fate meaning something unpredictable; erratic, capricious…implying perhaps the unpredictable qualities of nature and small business?

The Vagary sells over 200 species of plants, a third of which are her specialty, native perennials and grasses. Best-sellers are cardinal flower, butterfly weed, and prairie smoke. Most plants are available throughout the growing season. The plants are particularly vigorous because
she overwinters, a technique that enhances their hardiness. Fifteen to twenty varieties of traditional herbs are also on hand. Nancy grows all plant materials herself.

When asked what the St. Paul Farmers’ Market means to her business she replied that the market and its customers helped sculpt her concept from the beginning. Like many of the best entrepreneurs her business evolved from a hobby. She listens closely to what customers enjoy in their garden and provides good advice so she has happy, repeat customers

Here’s a technique for storing fresh basil, which does not dry well since its flavors are volatile:

Harvest your basil. You can leave the stems intact if you like. Wash and dry thoroughly. Nancy thinks salad spinners are really effective. Place in freezer bags. When you need the flavors of basil for any dish (minestrone, pasta dishes, whatever) simply remove from the bag and rub/crush in your hand while still frozen over a bowl! Measure the amount you want and add to recipe.
